Launched in 2003 in New York City, 3sixteen
is led by two individuals - Andrew Chen
and Johan Lam
- who simply aim to produce clothing and accessories that are completely indicative of their personal beliefs. Indeed, in order to truly understand 3sixteen
and what sets them apart in an increasingly competitive space, one must take a step back and unpack their guiding
credo - "what we make is who we are".
The name, 3sixteen, is derived from the ubiquitous bible verse, John 3:16 - "For God so loved
the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". While the meaning of this popular quote resonates differently from person-to-person, in 3sixteen's case it serves as a constant reminder to produce the absolute best possible garments while maintaining honesty and integrity in every aspect of the business.
Whether they are selecting a particular manufacturer (e.g. Tanner Goods
), textile mill (e.g. Kuroki denim mill)
, or retailer to partner with (e.g. they are also the co-own Self Edge New York
), a specific fabric to incorporate into an upcoming piece, or a general design to utilize, all decisions are made with this core tenet in mind. They do not take this approach for any reason aside for that they fully believe their commitment to, and the caliber of, their menswear line would cease to exist otherwise.
In terms of the evolution of 3sixteen, the line had its humble beginnings in graphic tees but pivoted into a more utilitarian creative direction in 2006. The idea behind their collections from 2006 onwards is that each is created with two purposeful components - (1) minimal, detail-riddled design; and (2) durable, long-lasting construction.
Although by definition "clothing" is stylistically ever-changing and physically does not always look better with age, 3sixteen aims to only produce products that do. As a result of this appreciation for practicality and longevity, each garment constructed serves as a menswear essential and integrates
smoothly into any wardrobe, season after season.
They offer a range of accessories and also produce shirts and outwear, but it is their denim jeans that is their marquee product. All denim is produced with 100% Japanese, Kuroki Mill denim, manufactured in the USA, and currently available in two classic fits - Slim Tapered ("ST") and Straight Leg ("SL").
